The popularity of payday loans is on the wane in the North West according to new research by R3, the trade body for insolvency practitioners.

It shows the number of people using payday loans has been falling steadily since its peak 18 months ago.

Depending on who you talk to, payday loans are either a blessing or a curse.  Suzie King's was a nightmare that lasted about four years.

"I thought I would never get rid of them," she says.  "I felt like I was chained to them."

King took out her first loan online for a reason many parents can understand-- she needed to buy school supplies for her three kids.

"I thought oh wonderful," King says.  "I don't have to worry! I can get my kids all the stuff they need. But I wasn't thinking 'what about next month?"

Springfield Pastor Working To Protect Families From Predatory Payday Loans

A pastor from Springfield is part of a delegation working to help families struggling with payday loans.

James River Church's Chuck Greenaway was part of a group that met with officials of government agencies and members of Congress to find solutions for predatory loan practices.

Greenaway says loan businesses in Missouri can charge more than 450 percent in interest and hopes Congress will make changes.

As the Church and Community Pastor at James River Church, Greenaway tries to help families who are victims of predatory payday loans and come to the church to get help. 

Greenaway says he hopes that local, state and national leaders will take notice and work toward protecting people who are trapped in debt.

Payday, auto loans now regulated, but travel loans still snare servicemembers

DETROIT (Tribune News Service) — He was just 19 years old, new to the military, and at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, for training.

That's when he fell into a financial trap.

A little short on cash but wanting to fly home to Michigan for Christmas, the airman called Easy Military Travel. The online agency looked official, with the slogan "the largest travel assistance provider for the U.S. Military." It helped servicemembers finance their travel needs and get them airline tickets, it said.
